After such a tremendous qualifying performance, hopes were running high at Hofmann’s for a strong finish in the race.  Sadly, it wasn’t to be, with mixed fortunes arising for both cars.

As darkness fell during qualifying at the 2011 Brands Hatch Lotus 1000K race, Hofmann’s drivers Chris Randall and Nick Tandy battled it out on the track against factory Evora entries and pro drivers.  Conditions couldn’t be much more challenging with darkness falling over a drying but greasy track.  The final positions went down to the wire with a strong fight coming from resident circuit instructor Jamie Stanley in his Exige.

Sadly with the loss of both Phil and Dan we were unable to compete at Barcelona but this hasn't stopped us ploughing on with the build of the Hofmann's Europa.  Instead of Barcelona we have entered the 1000Km race with LOTRDC at Brands Hatch and we are hoping to better last years 2nd place finish.

Since the last blog entry was some time ago there has been an awful lot of progress with the car that has gone unreported but I'll do my best to cover the pertinent points over the next couple of blog entries.

With the passing of Phil and Dan it became impossible to compete at the Barcelona 24 hour but instead of halting preperations to the car we decided to re-schedule and enter the Brands Hatch 1000Km race in November. We will be running the race in remembrance of Phil and Dan and the Hofmann's Europa, a car they both put their talents into building, will be bearing both their names.

Details of the event can be found here: http://motorsportvision.co.uk/calendar/2011/nov/lotus-1000k.aspx

At the start of the year Nitron launched a new range of dampers with a larger diameter body, up from 40mm to 46mm, a correspondingly larger piston and a larger piston rod.  The idea behind this change is to firstly displace more oil during every stroke, which allows for better damping resolution and also to increase the oil capacity in the damper to improve the stability of the damper with temperature.  On the basis that a dampers primary role is to convert energy in the spring into heat these changes seem a sensible way to go.

Lots going on since the last update but, as ever, it’s hard to keep up with the build as well as the blog.

The last couple of days have involved lots of research and practical tests to help me decide what choices to make in relation to the engines chargecooling system.  Thanks have to go out to both Sam Borgman at TDI and Alex at Pro-Alloy who have, in the absence of my own grey matter, leant me theirs over the course of several extended phone conversations.  We have known for some time that our chargecooling system hasn't been working as efficiently as we would hope and this translates to a big loss of horsepower on the race track.

Lots of organising, parts ordering and general preparation going since the first blog entry.  I've booked a Villa for all the guys to stay during an before the event so they now have some very comfortable surroundings to recoup in and hopefully they will be giving 100% during the event as a result of that and also booked all the flights.  I have several spreadsheets running to try to keep on top of timescales, spares list, budgets and car preparation.  Scary how much prep goes into a 24 hour race!
